I need another Otocinclus expert .....
These guys just showed up on an exporter list from Peru. Never heard of these species:
Otocinclus chicharra
Otocinclus otorongo
Otocinclus tiger
Otocinclus vampiro
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
James

Re: I need another Otocinclus expert .....
I could imagine "vampire" is and "tiger" is , but I could also be way off.
Thing is that these lists have a native/common name field and a scientific/latin name field and often both fields have the same (native/common!) name. Surprise yourself. I doubt there would be a huge risk when Otocinclus species are involved.

Re: I need another Otocinclus expert .....
I did find a picture of what was labeled as "tiger". It was a long slender body. Looked like a Mimulus that was stretched out. ;o)
I just hate when they list them with a common name and then the scientific name is listed as Otocinclus sp. That really tells a lot.

Re: I need another Otocinclus expert .....
It's not a very good pic, but I don't think so. Post some better pics and someone can probably identify them properly for you.
Anyway, compare the catelog photo of cocama to your original picture. They could be the same fish.

Re: I need another Otocinclus expert .....
Are you saying my second picture of Otocinclus Cocama is not actually O. Cocama??
I highly beg to differ with you on that one.

No, they are saying that both pictures are of O. cocama.James0816 wrote:Are you saying my second picture of Otocinclus Cocama is not actually O. Cocama??
There may be a bit of variation in the markings, but what makes you think this is interspecific - i.e. deviating substantially from the holotype?
The description is freely available. I would like to hear your thoughts.

Re: I need another Otocinclus expert .....
They are quite variable, and the pigmentation of O. cocama also changes with age and mood. It is possible there are geographic variants or closely related species, but if so that's unknown to me.racoll wrote:There may be a bit of variation in the markings

Re: I need another Otocinclus expert .....
Well I will definately say that this is completely new to me. I haven't seen a Cocama look like the first pic I posted..which is a strapping young feller if I must say.
I will go back and do more research.
