It's been settled: one of my fisheri females is going to Belgium to - hopefully - make a single male happy. And his keeper probably as well.

I hope, maybe if the skinny male puts on some weight, I may get them to do the same.
I'd like to add to the group someday...

When moving home (and tanks), I found the remains of the skinny male - it was, as I suspected, too far gone. I also found out whhat happened to the third specimen! I have a Rena Smart heater which has a hole running down the back to allow use of an external filter inlet - the two missing ones must have got stuck in there, and one was obviously able to exit when I moved the tank around last time due to having lost so much weight. I found the skull of the third one in the bottom of the heater grill :(

I've enquired about some (see viewtopic.php?f=29&t=32968) and these were apparently featured in PFK earlier this year. I'm hoping to acquire a trio, to go with my single remaining . Am just waiting to hear back from the shop...

Please post images. I think it is unlikely that they will be true galaxias (please note I dont think the clog images show true galaxias either). They are possibly going to be these:

Which grow into these:

Will do Steve, as much as I'd love to assume they are 'true' galaxias, I am going to try and get some photos before I commit.
Thanks Steve

Today we've done the first major overhaul of the large tank since it arrived last August.
A number of fishes were taken out. 8 Hemigrammus caudomaculatus (ex-feeders for Tetranematichthys), 1 Astyanax sp and 3 Callichthys went to Alex.
1 Dekeyseria brachyura and a huge pair of Trachelyopterus galeatus went to a good LFS, due to a serious lack of interest. Hopefully they can provide them a good home.

Although we initially thought of adding more characins, the idea is now to add the 5 remaining Auchenipterus nigripinnis to the large tank. Hopefully they'll be a bit happier and less skittish in 2 meters. On the other hand this move may include a risk as they may well spook my not-so-brave Triportheus.
Anyway, we'll see. Keep you posted.

Also we were able to do a head count yesterday and to my joy all auchenipterids were still present and in good shape. Moreover, this was the first time I could actually spot at least one male specimen of the I bought at Pier in 2007.
This turns out to be a smaller and rather timid species - despite its looks (it always reminds me of a mini-Trachycorystes).

I have just spoken to the shop, and although they are going to email over some pictures later today, the description of a 3-4" brown fish with cream oval spots pretty much confirms there are not T.galaxias, but Tatia intermedia or the species linked to above, as suspected. Shame...

yes, they are a lovely yet weird fish. My friend still has his pair. They are adult and sexually mature at just 5 inch approx.:

Yes, will upload the pics later. Apparently they came from Aquarium Glaser as T.galaxias.

Martin

p.s. I'm guessing you know the chap my T.gyrina came from - do you know if he has any left from that batch available? I'd like to add a few more to my lone female and make a small group again.

Steve,
It may be your friend's fishes are better fed, but mine are much flatter and more uniformly coloured. None of those 5 has anything that looks like an "upgoing" cranal area. Too bad the tank got a bit messy yesterday, therefore I decided to take no pictures.
The fishes of your friend remind me more of my trio I still haven't found a name for, but which look strikingly familiar to T. coriaceus, but with an adipose.

Hi Marc

These were bought around the same time as Neil had them in (but from another, local, shop). This is a pic of them as a smaller fish:

http://www.scotcat.com/thedarkone/auche ... s_sp_3.jpg

They could be different of course.

Yes, but it remains difficult. My C-log pictures (taken on arrival over here in Feb 2007) indeed don't show very flattened specimens, but when seeing them yesterday their shape reminded me a lot of .

As said before, it could be they are underfed compared to your friend's specimens. They are the "Auchenipterinae sp. Guyana" of my large tank, thus always the last to come out for food.
That was also one of the main reasons I had to say goodbye to my swimming dustbins, T. galeatus. The other swimming bin, Liosomadoras oncinus, was vetoed by my family....... :icon-wink:

This is a view of the head of the adult male. I think it is different to your fish as your clog photos show a very wide head in proportion to rest of body (albeit they needed feeding up).

My auchenipterid hobby got a significant boost yesterday when Alex returned from OF-Aquaristik (aka Tanganyika.de) with a most unexpected species.
While I expected Triportheus albus (and/or nematurus) and Brachychalcinus orbicularis (all characins), he brought me 2 (females; these were the last 2 specimens) . How about that for a huge surprise :d
It was rather late when I added them to the tank yesterday evening, so I didn't see much of them then, but this morning they seem to be doing okay.
Pictures asap.

Thanks both and yes, the hobby could certainly do with a boost. They seem pretty happy and were feeding on mosquito larvae just now.

On a side note: are or aren't these the same that Neil has (had?) in stock for some time now?
They were discussed in here, but I was unable to find the right page......
I recall some people thought those were which I doubted, yet I didn't see them in real life. Weren't you interested in them Martin or am I completely off?

Will see if I can find the page.

For some reason the image won't come along, but I found it on page 62, somewhat below the middle.
I'm still convinced it's not Ageneiosus sp. 3, but I'm also pretty sure it's not A. cf atronasus either.....

Am always interested! As much as I'd love these, my tank isn't big enough to give them the swimming space they'd need. Keep us informed on how they are getting on Marc.

Well Arjan, you've managed to find a picture of a species I've never seen before.
But indeed, there seem to be quite some species that don't grown huge or rather stay relatively small. I am still very happy with my two new specimens, although the numbers of Gnathocharax are rapidly decreasing.......
One can be seen most of the day; the other hides somewhere (and I would really like to know where; saves me a lot of time trying to find it with a flash light), but shows up almost immediately after lights out.
This tank is doing fine atm, with the exception of the Auchenipterus nigripinnis. Keeping them in there is no longer an option, but I'm afraid their behaviour will stress the fishes in the large tank as well (although Alex doesn't think so).
Thus, I'm afraid that's the last option, unless someone else can provide them a quiet tank.

Why don't you want to keep them anymore? Are the new inhabitants bad company for them?

I have a quiet tank and am possibly willing to buy them.

After a long and nice phone conversation Kruseman has decided not to buy them, because he can't provide them with a tank that can fulfill their needs.

Bijn, could they be an asset to your subtropical tank? They originate from Argentina, so they should be able to cope with lower temperatures.

Great! That will make your future trip to Eindhoven even more rewarding, as you'll go home with 6 fishes instead of 1.
Let's do the details through PM.
