emergency - L66 not eating
hi,
none of my newly aquired L66 seem to be eating much if at all and two have the beginging signs of sinking bellies. i have tried feeding them frozen shrimp, shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and frozen blood worms. I even tried the garlic thing that makes my other plecos hungry and eat. i am hopping after settling in to their Qtank they begin to eat. i have heard of force feeding plecos with a syringe filled with food and a tube on the end that goes to the fishes mouth a while back on some web site. has any one ever tried this? what do you think i should try?
thanks,
BK

Hi!
You should feed them during the night when all the lights of your tank are out.
Secondly what T° do you have in the tank 27-28°C should be a minimum.
Have you tried Sera 20% Spirulina tablets? I have used many types of tablets and these are the one they eat very well, when you drop one is like droping Blood worms: they go crazy.
What are the water parameters of the tank?
How long since it has been running?
When you feed them try to leave them alone for a while, don't try to look or check if they have or are eating, you should let them settle in a bit first.
Cheers

the tank was set up friday using some driftwood and an established/cycled cellpore cartridge from my 120 gallon and the fish were put in on saturday. the tank they were in before (temporary holding tank) was cooler than the tank they went in saturday, its set at 28°C. i believe the ph is a tad below 7 but i'll check tomorrow and check kh and gh to.
i haven't tried the sera tabs. i would but they aren't available anywhere locally. i use wardleys premium algae waffers because my other plecs have showed a preference to them over the hikari algae waffers.

Hi!
Did you prepare the water before setting it up Friday, if not chlorine in the water can kill the good bacteria of your filter.
Check the oxygen saturation, or make sure the tank is well oxygen.
Have they enough place to hide?
IS the tank place in a place where there are a lot of movements in front of the tank.
Where is it put in your house?
Keep them in a dark for a while ( if you have no plants) so they can settle in.
They are probably stressed by the fact you move them from the other tank to this new one, since you got them not too long ago as well, they must have been pretty stressed by all these changes.
Feed them when the lights are out, feed just a bit at first and check 30 minutes later if they have eaten. But don't disturb them while they are eating.
Cheers

hi,
there is only about 25 gallons in the 29 gallon tank they are in. all the water was conditioned the day before they went in and was left to sit in an old 20 gallon tank i use for holding water with a powerhead to stir it up good. about 5 gallons was taken from my big tank. there is a big sponge filter and a old whisper powerfilter providing aration/surface water agitation. the tank is in the corner of my basement and there isn't a lot of people going by it. there are 3 pieces of driftwood with many crevises/tunnels and a clay cave that they can hide in
3 of them are very active except for the fact they don't seem to be eating well.
thanks,
BK

Hi!
Ok so all this seem to be alright.
I guess they are just a bit stressed by the changes.
Let them settle in a bit and in a couple of days it should be alright.
Give jus a little bit of food when the lights are out and check a moment later or the morning after.
Cheers

hi,
i had to go back to colledge so my dad is watching them for me until the 16th of May when school ends. from what he has told me they are all appear to be doing fine and all the shrimp pelets and meaty treats are disapearing. they apparently don't like algae waffer a great deal so he is going to try zuchini/cucumber. i think i will end up slitting them between two 30 gallons or put them all in a 50 gallon once they are out of quarintine.
yann, in an earlier post you said that they might like gammarus, should these be live, frozen, or freeze dried?
thanks for all the help
