Not a Callichthys callichthys

Post by SoS »

I purchased this Catfish under the name Armored Catfish. I refered to my axelrod atlas and compared it to the Callichthys callichthys Photo's and they look similiar but differant.

It looks more like a Hoplosternum Pectorale but jet black. Anybody know? Its about 5 1/2 inches long.

Whatever he is he's a beautiful fish and seems to fit the personality of my tank perfectly.
Hungry sucker too :P

That's what I thought. Just the color on this one is alot darker. He's around 5 1/2 to 6 inches.

Hi!

The Mergus Index Book features a "Hoplosternum thoracata var. niger" i cant remeber the right latin name cauz i dont have the book here. But it looks like the black Hoplo in the book. Ive been searching for these for a while and noone had ever seen them.
Nice fish!

Hoplosternum tend to become more uniformly-colored with age. Besides, the fish in the Mergus Atlas isn't black but a very dark brown anyway.
