can you confirm show size?

Post by fishiechris »

Hi there everyone,
I was hoping that someone would be able to confirm the correct FBAS show size for Parotocinclus jumbo. I have a few ive had for a while and been out of the loop when it comes to showing. This site says 50mm. Is this correct? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,
FishBase lists 5,8 cms SL (which means without the tail), so there's a gap of 0.8 cms between both sources. I doubt it this fish will get much larger than 6 cms TL (including tail).

CLOFFSCA also lists a 5.7cm SL size, so I should think that it's around there...

fishiechris,

When it comes to show sizes of fish you will find that there will be conflict between the various UK organisations, of which there are six in the UK. Add to this the fact the Catfish Study Group has its own set of Catfish standards, which are in the process of being brought up to date.

If you want the FBAS's standard it would be best to contact them directly, unless there are any FBAS judges on this forum that can give you the information.

I believe that the FBAS have changed their system and take references from Fish Base, which I think is not the best place to get information as to the size a fish can or should achieve under aquarium conditions.

Bear in mind that SL means standard length which is "nose to caudal peduncle", or put another way, "not counting the tail-fin". So 5.7-5.8 cm means that it's a good 6.5-7cm in TOTAL length (TL).

Not sure if show-size is SL or TL.

MatsP,

Show sizes in all the federations are in Standard length.
