Alot of what you want for your 55 g tank depends on what you actually like, and what the purpose of the fish is.
Bristlenoses are nice in my opinon. The common variety isn't very difficult to find in most places (but there are exceptions), and then there are more exotic varieties. However, beware that some of the more exotic varieties may struggle with water conditions if you don't have the right chemistry in your tank (e.g. will not be very happy in hard water, it comes from quite acidic and soft "black-water" rivers).
Generally, anything that grows to less than about 6" (150mm) will be fine in a standard 55g tank [It's quite possible to make a 55g tank to non-standard dimeensions, which will potentially change the suitable fish-size].
