Oh dear, poor little fellow.... There are some truly evil and greedy people out there who are only interested in the cash and prey on unexperienced hobbyists and defenseless animals to make their dollars and cents! Their time will come if we have anything to do with it.
Name and shame is the game that we need to play!!!
Any idea of supplier Dave?

Dave,
Are you sure it is dyed? It does look odd, but these albino particular plecos look odd to my eyes anyway. Were there other colours?

Hi!
Yes they were dyed. The other color I saw was blue which made it kind of look normal!

The owner said they came in by mistake. I didn't ask which wholesaler.

Dave,
No question that they are dyed then. Hopefully, like dyed Corydoras, the market will not make them profitable. If anyone else encounters these lets post it here and see what we can do to educate the masses to avoid buying these things.

For every good, responsible hobbyist, there are 3 of the people that replace their fish on a monthly basis as they die, until they get sick of all the problems and sell their "failure" tank in the paper.
I actually had a customer scold me when I told her we'd be ordering NO more of those painted glass fish. I didn't morally think we should encourage the dying of fish by marketing them. She informed me I had no right to judge her moral character *sigh*. I would stand there and tell people they were dyed and why it was so hard on the fish and would appreciably shorten their life span, only to have people ask for 3 blue and 2 pink ones please. I even raised the price. Nothing helped.
People that will listen to reason can be steered away, but there will always be a market for the poor things.

Hi there, Is there no aquatic governing body in the states. We have OATA in UK and members have to follow certain guidelines. Unfortunately this may not cover fish dying as I regulary see dyed fish on some wholesale fish lists. The plec in picture may be an albino form but can't say for sure, but it is certainly very thin.

Man that is just wrong. But like anything, if there is a market out there people will go to all kinds of lengths to make cold hard cash! Like it has been said before, the only way to stop abuses such as this is to take away the market. I noticed that on this forum there are several respected members who own or work at LFS. I would suggest that we add a LFS webring here where certified and/or well known members can sell/buy fish. I would love to have a "goto" online fish store, who would follow ethical treatment of fish policies and guidelines.
I would also suggest that maybe there could be a Planetcatfish.com certification award which could be given to certian LFS /Online stores, as long as they follow strict guidelines!
It starts here boys and girls. Grass roots all the way!!
