Treatment for Giraffe Catfish with Cloudy Eyes

Post by Steven Greener »

Recently the eyes on my Giraffe Catfish (Auchenoglanis occidentalis)have started too look cloudy. Is there a treatment I can use to restore them to normal?

Did you check your water parameters? Cloudy eyes can be a sign of water gone bad.

PH is 7.5 and Nitrate levels are trace. I have carried out a 50% water change and will see if the eyes improve.

Great. His eyes are much better. The cloudiness has almost gone and his eyes are back to a clear brown again!

Nitrate levels of near zero is a warning-sign to me. It means one of two things:
1. The tank is not mature (or the filter-bacteria has died after the tank had been mature).
2. Your nitrate test-kit isn't working.

To ensure it's not (1) above, you should test your water for ammonia & nitrite. Those are much more harmful than nitrate.
