new member...with questions.

Post by pressureflip »

hello all, i wanted to say hello as i am new to this site. my name is adam and i live in saint petersburg, fl . i am new to keeping fish and i had some questions about three of the catfish that i keep. i was told that these fish were african butter catfish...

i was hoping that someone on this site might keep this fish as well. does anyone know what size this type of catfish will become? i feed mine flakes, shrimp pellets, and crushed up up algae wafers. should i be feeding them another type of food? i have found some limited information about this fish, but not that much. :?

There are certainly keepers of on the board. According to this list the largest ones grow to about 250mm (10"), but several species are smaller than that. They are unfortunately not the easiest to identify, but is the most commonly seen one (18 registered keepers).

The following is a list of the "runners up" in number of keepers
(9)
(5)
(2)

There are other species that are not even listed in the Cat-eLog.

it's not that hard.

yes, it could be another Sturisoma, and i might miss the mark.
BUT festivum is by far THE most common Sturisoma in the hobby and it really looks like this fish,
festivums are usually sold as "Sturisoma aureum", but AFAIK the real aureum comes from Venezuela and imports from Venezuela are rare or nonexistent.

chances are remote it's another Sturi.

Great pic  You should send that to Jools.

Images should be emailed in .jpg format to [email protected] with your full name and, if you have one, your forum username so we can credit you for the contribution and link it to your forum posts.
Feel free to send images in as large a format as you can, we're happy to resize and otherwise manipulate them and it gives us more flexibility the larger the image is.
If you want to put your logo or text on the image, please do but bear in mind the next point PLEASE!
All catfishes on Planet swim to the right, up or face the viewer. Please flip your images accordingly. Don't worry, we will do this for you if you don't.
If you have lots to send please do, but bear in mind we're unlikely to use lots of images that are similar.
It would help if you send images for one species per email
If we have, say, twelve images of a species, you'll have to come up with something better or new to what is already there to likely have the image used. That said, it might show something new and all twelve images are great and I don't want to change them and so we can add anything up to about 60 images per species. This is unusual though.
It's REALLY helpful if you name the image files along the lines of nanobagrus_nebulosus.jpg, panaque_maccus(male).jpg and so on. Or you can just list all the filenames in the email and explain what they are.

Although I would sincerely say that it's NOT S. festivum, as that region on Venezuela/Colombia are not regular exports. There are several other Sturisoma spp. that are regularly exported, and it is one of those that the above picture shows. The most likely (from a statistical perspective) is:
