Pseudeutropius or Neotropius

Post by retro_gk »

Hi all,
went fishin' yesterday, caught some amblyceps and what I thought was P.antherinoides.After some research on the web, I am more confused than ever :?
is it Pseudeutropius or Neotropius?
The fish is about 2.5" long SL, bluish in color, with a dark stripe along the anal fin and two dark patches above pectoral.
4 pairs of barbels, 2 maxillary, 2 mandibular. 1 pair of maxillary extends beyond pectoral fin.
adipose present, Dorsal 1+5, anal fin 2/3 SL.
They swim a couple of inches below the water surface in the open. also ate a few 1" guppies and noemacheilus Spp.
Any help re. identification appreciated. thanks
rahul.

It's Neotropius. Pseudeutropius is a Southeast Asian genus and is not found in India.
Are there stripes along the body as well? I have not seen N. atherinoides eat other fish, so it could be young of another genus.

I just went through the E-log and my fish most closely matches proeutropiichthys takree, though the color pattern on my fish is slightly different. Also all 4 fish that I caught seem to be males with 1/4" long thin genital papillae...now for some females :D.
So how big do these get? any further info?

They reach about 40 cm TL.

Just went through fishbase and found the range given for P.takree is far from where I got mine (the ganges). Could mine be another genus/species?
fishbase also says that they prefer to feed from the surface, mine never do, prefer either midwater or bottom. even their behaviour has changed once they settled in, now swim midwater, prefer planted parts of tank and are somewhat scrappy, smallest with injuries on flank.

Sorry, should have caught this earlier, but the picture in the Cat-eLog labelled as P. taakree is definitely not a Preutropiiichthys. It's just a Neotropius atherinoides with a less distinct spot at the base of the caudal peduncle.
I have kept Neotropius and have never found them to fight each other or eat smaller fishes, so your observation is quite interesting.

Maybe the aggression stems from the fact that it is their spawning season now?
