I recently picked up a unidentified member of the Doradidae currently about 3.5 inches and I'd like to get a true ID. I plan on removing it from the tank it's in to get some good shots for ID and want to get the right shots the first time, so I'm looking for advice. First what's the best way to get shots for ID, in water, on table, etc, and second what areas are need for a good ID? Face full on, face side shot, caudal spread, etc?
Thanks.

Re: Shots to ID Doradidae?
I'd suggest in-water rather than 'dry' - you may need to move it to a small holding tank if possible, or into a plastic floating nursery tank (not the neting type for obvious reasons). The only reason dry is not good is that the fins tend to clamp up and sometimes the shape/colours can be definitive indicators.
Have you looked through the images in the Cat-eLog yet for ?
I'd suggest side on, and definitely pictures of the mouth and barbels as these can be discerning indicators for particular species.
As long as the pics are clear, then I'm sure it can be ID'd by one of the experts here without putting it through too much stress for pictures.
