21st June 2008 - Auto suggestions for common names feature
I've been meaning to add something like this to the site for ages. Thankfully MartinS did all the hard work and I only had to figure out how to plug it into Planet.
Check out here: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/common_names.php and try typing things into the search box. Good examples are things like red, shark, cactus etc.
Happy for suggestions for further use of this kind of thing or improvements to the common name search to be made in the site suggestions & bugs forum.
Finally, a big thanks to MartinS!

Re: 21st June - Auto suggestions for common names feature
Am just really pleased that I was able to eventually get this working, but am sure it took a fair amount of work for Jools to implement what I had done into the existing layout, as he is the real php expert and this was my first dive into php. Thanks to his time and patience in getting me started, we got there in the end!
Thanks to Jools for all his continuing hard work on the site, and I hope that I will be able to contribute some more if the need arises.

Anyone else think we should have something like this in the nav bar?

Not quite sure what you want to put into the navbar - a "Search by common name"?

Re: 21st June 2008 - Auto suggestions for common names feature
Something that would search by common name or species name - essentially a quick way of getting to a species. You could type in "adolf" and get to Corydoras adolfoi very quickly. Searches like L123 (get to an l-no quick), Arius (get to a genus quick) or Banjo (get to a species from a common name you might have just seen in an LFS) would all be rather useful to get at quickly?

Yes, I agree - I wasn't clear on exactly what you meant, but the idea is definitely good [not that you have a habit of coming up with bad ideas in my experience - probably because you think about it BEFORE you post! ;)]
Could we make it [optionally?] open in another tab/window as well, since I find myself quite often having to open another tab when I need to look up "Corydoras adolfoi" or some such - because I happen to need it when I'm posting.

You can right click on any suggested link and click "open in new tab" - that's easier than me coding an option to do that and is what I did naturally (e.g. without think about it).MatsP wrote:Could we make it [optionally?] open in another tab/window as well, since I find myself quite often having to open another tab when I need to look up "Corydoras adolfoi" or some such - because I happen to need it when I'm posting.
Did you get the code from me for this to play around with it?
Cheers,

I did get the code, but I've been quite busy lately, so haven't had any time to look at it.
