corydoras in 32g tank

Hi everybody,

just trying to work out some ideas for my new 32 gallon tank. I am considering having cory's and or small pl*co's (questions concerning those will be posted in the appropriate forum ), and although I have some ideas, I'd like to have your opinions as well..

main question: how many corydoras (smaller species up to 2inch/5cm) would you put in a 32 gallon (115liter) tank? any comments welcome! footprint of tank is 31,5x14 inch (80x35cm), filter is eheim 2222 and i am strongly considering putting a small sump filter (40liter) in the cabinet underneath, to improve the total volume. I am not looking at overstocking in any way, just wanna know what you guys (and girls) find appropriate.

it is mainly (make that probably solely ) gonna be a catfish tank, setup will be heaps of driftwood with dedicated swimming/resting spaces ofcourse. Cheers!

I'd be tempted to go for a shoal of 15 corys of a single species & mabe a dozen small tetras (of a single species) to act as a dither fish. Maybe you could then squeeze in something for the algae as well - a pair of

Ancistrus claro

would go nicely or a small group of otos

i agree, I would probably have around 15-20 corys at max. As they all shoal together, I would consider getting 2 or 3 different species, but only because I wouldnt be able to decide on which species to get. I recently bought a pair of

Peckoltia braueri

. They are great algae eaters and get on great with the corys. I would proably get a shoal of peaceful tetra as dither fish, and prbably a pair of banjo's, simply because I love them.

I'd go for 2 species of cory that are very different. Eg- C. Rabauti and C Melanistius, or C. Sterbai and C. Guapore.

Set the temperature and conditions they like and choose companions that will live happily and won't compete with them. Such as glass cats, syno nigriventris, bristle nose cats and perhaps a shoal of harlequins or emperor tetras?

thanks for the replies! only consideration i would have with those.. is 15 to 20 cory's (not the midget species like hastatus, habrosus or pygmaeus) not quite a lot for a tank with this footprint? i mean filtration will be pretty efficient, but still... i do know that they don't produce nearly as much waste as say big pl*co's for example, what do you think? anyways, thanks for sending your options, i appreciate it!

According to the stocking maths of fish per cm2, 14 cories would be about right. However, aquaria has advanced so much since then we need a new system.

I remember reading somewhere that Corys can be kept more densely than other fish, so long as you provide biological filtration, and well planted with grassy plants. Don't know why though.

I think that around 15 Corys, a pair of Ancistus or Peckoltia and some dither fish would go well.
