Yes, when we (me and Richard) was at Pier Aquatics just after Christmas, there were some larger whiptails where the body was easily 12" not counting the caudal fin. Neil reported that in Argentina they saw ones that were 2ft long, with about 4ft caudal extensions. So in the whole scheme of things, 5" is not very large. But of course, these aren't common in the fish-shops, so I'm not surprised you have never seen them.
