No fishing in Kolkata

Post by Silurus »

I was in Kolkata (Calcutta) attending an IUCN workshop for most of this week. Didn't get an opportunity to fish, but still snapped some pictures of cats in the markets.

Image
A basket of tenggara, consisting mostly of Mystus vittatus/M. tengara with smattering of O. bimaculatus at a wholesale market. The catfish in the container in the lower left corner is M. gulio

Chopped up Silonia silondia

Image
Silonia with other catfishes (Wallago attu, Sperata). The carp with the large, blunt head on top of the picture is Catla catla.

Silonia silondia again

Image
Pseudeutropius/Neotropius found amongst the small Clupisoma illustrated previously. This one was unusual in having the upper jaw teeth outside its mouth.

Close up showing the exposed teeth. This is the typical morphology of a scale-eating fish.

Nice pics HH - thanks for posting  That last one is a great illustration of a specialist feeder.

but now I got a question!
Sorubim lima also has a huge overbite/rostrum that is covered with teeth.....is the lima scientifically known as a scale eater as well?

But there is a scale-eating species in this genus (N. khavalchor) which has exactly this morphology.
