Bumblebee Catfish

Post by MackIntheBox »

My friend recently got this cat from a Petco or Petsmart, they called it a "Bubblegum Catfish." Right now it is about 1inch long, maybe 1.5. It is Black with White spots, the spots are more clear than white I beleive as you can see through the spot on its tail. It looks like just baout any cat you would get out of the lake, imagine themost generic cat and you got its basic body structure. Im just looking for some info on it and wondering how big it will get and if I can get more ;) hehe. nice looking fish :) I will try and get a pic but im at work and i dont have a card reader at home :?

Thanks,
Yashmack

not quite, but that fish you showed looks larger... The spots in this guy are really large, imagine a cow :) I so wish I had a card reader. I dont beleive it has a dorsal fin, if it does it is small, very small. that one does look close but it doesnt look similar enough.

I will try and get some images of it up tonight unless someone can show me something else mre siilar first :)

I figured it out, its a Bumblebee Jelly Catfish :) It is listed as such in the Cat-eLog uner common names. I was mastaken in the bubblegum name, heh. Looks like this fish will get to be 8 inches long  thats pretty big for my 5 or 8 gallon tank...

are there any similar looking cats that will not get to be so big? about how long will it take for this to reach over 4 inches? Im guessing thats about the size that I will run out of room... maybe sooner with the shape of my tank...

maybe you can return it to the shop? imo 5 gallon is pretty small for everything over 3 cm. Maybe look into some smaller Corydoras.
cheers

too later to return it, I do have a 40 gallon tank that I can probably put it in but that has a softshell turtle in it, not sure if they would get along... Firebelly toad in there too...

Dont wanna take it back, I like it :) What size tank do you think I would need for this critter? What is the best food for this cat at his under 2 inch massiveness right now :p and what will he eat later? im kinda new to fish, my room mate is slightly more knowledgable and it was given to him, I do have some experience and knowledge on it but not on things that are gonna be this big :)

thanks for any info.

A 30-gallon should do.

They are not picky eaters. Flakes, pellets, bloodworms are all eaten with gusto. In time to come, they will eat small fishes, of course.

At what size should he be removed from a (aproximate) 8 gallon tank?
