$ Value of Annual Retail Sales of Aquarium Fish

Post by Dinyar »

I'm looking for a number from a credible source for the monetary value of total annual retail aquarium fish sales. Preferably worldwide, but any info, however fragmentary, would be interesting.

Meanwhile, what's a good guess as to order of magnitude? Billions or hundred millions?

I found these numbers for Germany 1999:
84.6 Million fishes in 3.1 million tanks.
122 mio dm for fishfood
339 mio dm for tanks, supplies, deco etc.
total pets was 106.8 mio animals
total market volume was 5.5 milliarden (billion?) dm
source is a press release of a fair from 2001. quite credible i think
cheers

In 1997, the retail value of marine ornamentals from Southeast Asia was estimated at $750 million. Got the data from here.
