clipped text in Cat-eLog entries
Hello Jools,
This is the requested reminder about the text clipping observed in some entries in the Cat-eLog. The ones that I previously noted are still there this morning (7/30).

Re: clipped text in Cat-eLog entries
Interesting, turns out this is only an issue in internet explorers other browsers (firefox, chrome and safari) all display correctly. Brilliant, another MS only hack to support...
Looking into it!

Re: clipped text in Cat-eLog entries
Lee,
I've got this down to a single line in the sites stylesheet (a master layout for all elements of the site, what is what colour, what font size is this or that, and all manner of other things). The offending line is for a style called list within the table TD element and it doesn't work as Microsoft says it should as per http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms530830.aspx.
I realise this is all double Dutch, but I find when I pick these things up after a bit of time away then this dribble helps me pick up the thread again faster.
The problem affects anyone using Microsoft internet explorer so I think I may have to hack this, but I really don't want to, and I am amazed it's not more widely document, so think it is likely me who is missing something.
Anyway, just an update to let you know I am still looking at this.

Re: clipped text in Cat-eLog entries
Been working some more on this, I think it's a compatibility issue with MSIE 6.0 or earlier. I've made a change that should address this on all versions (older then MSIE 5.5).
So, back to speaking English, Lee, does it now look OK for you?

Re: clipped text in Cat-eLog entries
Lee,
I got your email noting the clipped text issue was not resolved and other things. On the specific issue of clipped text, I replicated and resolved the issue at my end. So we are definately looking at the same page and issue, can you visit the page below and hold down the shift key while clicking on the page refresh button. Is it still clipped?

Re: clipped text in Cat-eLog entries
Sorry Lee, I gave you incorrect advice on how to force the refresh. It appears to be CTRL + Shift + click refresh. Or Indeed CTRL + Shift + F5 if that an easier contortion.

Re: clipped text in Cat-eLog entries
Hi Jools,
Went in through the front door (Home) and the horizontal grab bar is missing and all fits on one fixed page. Yea.
Not to do negative vibes but the Cat-eLog entries still have the clipped text. I did try the refresh as requested.

Lee,
I don't think you've cleared out the cache - I just can't see any other explanation. Does anyone else who had the clipped text problem like to chip in?

Re: clipped text in Cat-eLog entries
Press CTRL-SHIFT-F5 when viewing a page - you'll notice that the page loads slower than usual, which is because the content is ALL fetched from the original source, rather than from local caches.
Caches are used in web-browsing, they hold copies of the "frequently used content" to avoid having to go all the way to fetch every single little bit of content. Sometimes [depending on how it's been set up and what content you are looking at] the cache can hold old content for a long time.

Re: clipped text in Cat-eLog entries
Hi Lee,
Sure. So, all browsers have a cache. A cache is an area on your hard disk where the browser stores the contents of a web page you view. The concept being that, if you go back to that page, the browser will first check the cache and if it has what it's looking for then it will use that in preference to pulling web page contents back down over the internet to your computer. To avoid it filling up all available hard disk space, there is a limit set on your cache that means it uses a set amount of disk and older things are forgotten irrespective of usefulness, a little like my brain in fact.
In the days before fast internet access this was more useful, but they still serve a great purpose in today's broadband world by limiting the amount of traffic to your computer and downloading only when new or forgotten content is encountered. It's particularly useful to use to see what your significant other was surfing the previous night.
The downside is that when a web page makes a change, the browser can miss it. The only way to "refresh the cache" is to go through the ctrl+shift+F5 thing (to force that single page) or you can clear our the whole cache by doing this: http://www.refreshyourcache.com/en/ie7/

Re: clipped text in Cat-eLog entries
Hi Jools and MatsP,
I am so lost with this. I tried the control + shift + renew and guess what...I ended up with a horizontal grab bar on the whole site! So could see the clipped text by dragging said bar. I went out and came back in and all was as it was before. ??? is all I can think. Today is a busy one and I will see about re-addressing this on the weekend. Any other hints will be appreciated and looked into on the weekend. Maybe I can get the Firefox fully intergrated on the weekend and bring this situation to its conclusion.
Thanks guys for all you have been doing.

Not a problem, here to help! Anyway and for NO OTHER reason, firefox is brilliant because of the spell checker (as I type it is telling me I've mistyped already) which works on any site where you type in text.lfinley58 wrote:Maybe I can get the Firefox fully intergrated on the weekend and bring this situation to its conclusion.

Re: clipped text in Cat-eLog entries
Hi Jools,
I am still picking up some clipping problems using IE. But with Firefox there are no such problems. I still haven't gotten the latter in as my default browser (proper terminology?), but will get this done shortly.

Re: clipped text in Cat-eLog entries
Lee,
Well, I've checked in IE and it checks out, so I'm a bit stuck on how to replicate the problem in order to fix it. Given it's not widely experienced by other users, I think it best if put down to some specifics in your computer; good to know firefox worked out - it's much better IMHO.
Cheers,
Jools
