ID on catfish in video?

Post by L number Banana »

I didn't think this should go into What's my catfish but my new catfish area has tons of what the French-Canadians are calling Bar-but and in the video, the area is correct. No one can tell me what the English or Latin name is, It's very common around here but with only that name I'm not positive on the ID. I keep hearing everyone talking about these fish and the fact that they stay small - makes me think my guesses are wrong.

The kids in the video show the "Barbut" at the end of the video. Hope that's enough, it's the only thing I could find under that name and it's definitely not a burbot (Lota lota), they call it "the small catfish." :?:
Here's the video:

? The other yellow bullhead, I should have tried various spellings. Barbottes is the name for all barbel bearing fish I guess.
My guesses were along the same lines but all the fisherman say the old ones are about 7 inches long or so. I think maybe they aren't recognizing the young and old as the same species? Could they look that different as juvies?

I'll print out the line drawing and bring it with me next time I go. And make note of how many barbels and where they are just in case I net one. Won't be keeping it but I'll take pics if I get one.

I don't have a tank big enough for one of those, yet.

... Geez, I took offense to the subjective reference of it being the ugliest fish etc....until I saw the pictures! :-X

Thanks

I am with Silurus although I could not be sure what kind of bullhead (ameiurus), black, brown, yellow, or white it was - there were never a good long shot in the video of that fish and it was covered in mud. Statistical chances are it is a brown - Ameiurus nebulosus indeed - they are the most prolific out of bullheads around the Great Lakes area, or at least Lake Ontario, and in NY state. The channel cat was easier to ID. Nice and plump.

That kid's so excited! That's cute. "If you guys like blood..." he says :)

i think that video is funny. When you watch just before the channel cat emerges, you can see a ton of baitfish in the water jumping... I would much rather have caught the fish causing the bait fish to jump than the cat (as I feel bad hooking catfish...)
