Common garden worm for fish food?

Post by bigamefish »

Hey everybody! I was just wondering if I could feed my larger cats some worms from the garden as a treat? If so how do I go about cleansing them ?
"Fishing provides that connection with the whole living world. It gives you the opportunity of being totally immersed, turning back into yourself in a good way. A form of meditation, some form of communion with levels of yourself that are deeper than the ordinary self."

Yes, provided you've not used chemicals in your garden it's an excellent feed. You do not need to clean them, soil isn't dangerous to the fish, but if you wish you can let the worms empty their bowels by keeping them for a day in a container with damp (not wet) tissue paper.

I feed earth worms to most of my fish (cichlids & cats), great free live food. Only downside is your fish can become hooked on them if you feed them too often.

Alternatively, you can clean & purge their digestive system by using a container partially filled with damp garden moss. You can also use this for quite a time before it needs replacing.

Because of the climate here, there are no worms outside to speak of. I keep a colony of redworms in a shipping styro in the fish room. I simply keep them in peat I've exhausted for my blackwater tanks and drop them straight into the tank after cutting them to an edible size.
