Third Syno ID! Petricola or Lucipinnis?

Post by 660Dave »

Hi again, sorry last one i promise! :))
These were bought as Synodontis Petricola, and labelled as such but also labelled with common name 'Dwarf Petricola'
I know these little fellas are not hybrids, just unsure if they are indeed true Petricola or Lucipinnis.
I appreciate the help, apologies for posting so many Id's, just trying to get myself sorted out!
Sorry the pics aren't great, these ones dont hang about in the open like the others, and the pics dont do them justice. Incredible looking fish.

Agreed, lucipinnis.

99% of places still sell fish labelled petricola which are lucipinnis, which was known as dwarf petricola for ages before being described in 2006.

Post as many IDs as you like, we're happy to help

Thanks for your help.
So i have two Lucipinnis now, and four hybrids (and a confirmed source for buying more Lucipinnis) i'll be moving the hybrids on. Currently they are in a 100 gallon Malawi tank. I'm picking up a second tank tomorrow, 55 gallon and am planning to keep it to just Brichardi and Syno Lucipinnis. A group of 8 Lucipinnis would be OK? And a Brichardi/Luci 'species' tank , would that work ok do you think?

The optimal water conditions required for each species are quite different, so I don't think mixing S. brichardi with S. lucipinnis is a good idea.

I am thinking he means the cichlid species neolamprologus brichardi. Not 100% sure, but that was how I read it.

I would think a 55 should be fine for 8 with brichardi colony (assuming you do mean the tang cichlid and not the syno sp.)

Sorry yes i mean the cichlid, Neolamprologus brichardi. I am interested in breeding the Brichardi, and in the fullness of time possibly the Lucipinnis (another tank set up for that in time) but i'll be buying juveniles so some way off that yet.
I know the Brichardi can be very aggressive when breeding, but i figured that maybe they may not be towards the synos, my malawis don't even acknowledge they are there most of the time.
