31: Will species search results be displayed in real time?
Hi Jools,
This post is not about a "bug" in the code, but rather about a feature that was present on the old site but it is gone now in 3.1:
On the old site, if you were to type a species name into the Species search box, then your results would begin to appear on the screen while you were still typing the name. In other words, you wouldn't need to hit the <Enter> key or click the search icon (magnifying glass /search symbol) after you were done typing the name in order to get your results. This real-time response feature was very convenient before, because it meant that if you had only a partial name, results would begin to appear and you could tell if you were on the right track while still entering the name; and as you typed more of the name, the results would narrow down to exactly what you wanted. It also meant that the current page you were on (the page from where you were starting the search) was still visible; it would simply get dropped down a little lower on the screen, beneath the actively populating results. That was good because it meant that if you didn't find the results you were looking for, you didn't have to leave your current page.
Under the 3.1 system, no results appear until you hit the <Enter> key or press the search icon. This then pushes you away from your current page in order to view the results. Consequently, if you don't know your fish's exact name and you type a wrong name or you mistype the name in the box, you get no results AND you also have to click the <Back> button on your browser to go back to the previous page you were viewing.
This is not a big deal, but I must say I thought it was really convenient and I appreciated that feature of the search behavior.
Thanks,
Eric

Absolutely, yes, this will be working again as was - i.e. search results will be shown in real time. Going to get my cats, aquaria and bLogs up and running first...

I'll have a look at this, now that I've got stuff reasonably working locally.

Ok, fix in R1518.
As usual, fix is currently not working on the site, this will happen when Jools uploads the changes to the site [and hopefully he will check that what I've changed makes sense FIRST, meaning he can't just click a couple of buttons somewhere].

Super! I really liked that feature on the old web page.
