Leiocassis bekantan (Bagridae), new species

Post by lfinley58 »

Ng, H.H. & Tan, H.H. 2018. Leiocassis bekantan (Teleostei: Bagridae), a new blackwater catfish from Borneo and Sumatra. Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters/IEF-1093/ 10 pages. Online first.
Abstract:
A new species of bagrid catfish in the genus Leiocassis is described from blackwater habitats in south central Borneo, central and southern Sumatra. Leiocassis bekantan, new species, can be distinguished from congeners in having a more produced snout with a longer preoral region when viewed ventrally, short extensions of the outermost principal caudal-fin rays, and a unique combination of: highly reduced supraoccipital process with posterior tip separate from nuchal plate, head length 28.7-32.9 % SL, head width 46.9-55.7 % HL, length of dorsal spine 12.6-16.8 % SL, posterior margin of dorsal spine smooth, length of pectoral spine 11.3-15.4 % SL, horizontally elongate pale spots on sides of body between dorsal and adipose fins, body depth at anus 11.2-15.5 % SL, anal fin with narrow brown band across middle third of fin, caudal peduncle depth 5.8-7.4 % SL, straight posterior margins of caudal-fin lobes, and 41-42 vertebrae. We also present evidence that L. hosii (previously considered a valid species) should be considered a junior synonym of L. micropogon.

I like to think it's a subtle reference to me because 'bekantan' is the Indonesian name for the proboscis monkey, which I use as my avatar b-)

"Etymology: The specific epithet is the Indonesian vernacular for the proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus), a primate from Borneo (where the type locality of L. bekantan is located) distinguished by its enlarged and very prominent nose. The name alludes to the prominent snout of this species when compared to congeners and is used as a noun."
