Old/New Fishkeeper Intro

Post by HowardHopkinson »

My name is Howard and would like to say hi to all.

Having kept aquariums on and off for many years, after a 12 year absence from fishkeeping I decided I'd get back into the hobby/passion. With that in mind, I bought a Fluval 240 aquarium and after cycling I have just finished stocking with fish. The only thig left to do is to get some more plants which I will do over the next few days.

I came here looking for identification of some Corydoras catfish I purchased this morning. I was told they were CW90's but after searching on Google, it became clear they were not CW90's. It was Google that led me your wonderful site and I knew I had to register at once.

I have made a new thread in the ID forum.

Welcome to Planet Catfish Howard.

I might struggle with Cory ID unless it's an easy one, but there are others here that can help!

Howard, if you're new to keeping cory cats, may I give you some advice on their "best care" practices? I noticed in your other thread (for the ID) that your tank substrate is gravel. That will likely harm your corys, which typically live on fine sand in nature. They like to bury their face in the sand looking for food. Gravel will erode their barbels. Consider changing your substrate to sand. An inexpensive source is swimming pool filter sand, which usually needs minimal rinsing straight out of the bag, or prewashed playground/sandbox sand, which may need a little more rinsing. In the USA, both of these are less than $10 USD for 50 pounds... more than enough for a few tanks. ;-)

Cheers, Eric
