Recently rescued this Pleco was sold to someone as a bristlenose but I have my doubts it is around 5 inches at the minute

Welcome to PlanetCatfish!
Your new pleco is certainly not a bristlenose. It is most likely either or (or a farmed hybrid of these). Tell them apart by looking at the belly pattern: P. pardalis has a spotted pattern, where P. disjunctivus has a vermiculated pattern.
Both get big.
