Individuals like the one pictured above is sold as “full spot royal pleco” and individuals like the one pictured below is sold as“half spot royal pleco” in Japan.Both are from Columbia.

Are they same l330?
Which type is original?
What makes such difference?

A Shane's world article lists the original l-number articles where you can see the original pictures.

L330 was full spotted but the species,
Panaque nigrolineatus_laurafabianae
, is variable and encompasses both patterns you mentioned.They also change with age, losing or gaining stripes with age.

All this is considered, AFAIK, colour variations within the species, whether they have a purpose or not is not known.
