Hi all,
These hoplos were wild-caught in the Rio Nanay near Iquitos by a friend of mine. They were mixed together with a group of other hoplos, including Dianema longibarbis and a few very small Megalechis.
The largest is about 5-6cm SL. The smallest about 2.5cm SL. I believe these are Callichthys callichthys or Lepthoplosternum, but I can't decide which. And if Lepthoplosternum, I'm unsure of the species ID.
According to Specieslink.net, Callichthys callichthys is everywhere (practically), so that's a definite option. Both Lepthoplosternum altamazonicum and Lepthoplosternum beni are found in the same area. If they are Lepthoplosternum, I was thinking they are L. altamazonicum, but the caudal peduncle seems to be too narrow (vertically) to be either of these species.
Can you help?
Thanks in advance, Eric

Follow up... the more I look at the pics, the more I think these are juvenile Callichthys callichthys. Please prove me wrong.

Dang. I wanted to be wrong. I didn't want another 16cm species.

Thanks Jools.
