Jools' Pike Cichlid

Post by Jools »

As proof that I do have some fish other than catfish and also to show you what I am keeping my fish in these days, here are a few pics. Shane asked me to take a few of them to show him, but I thought I would share with the whole forum.

Image

A pike cichlid from Venezuela that I caught in a fast flowing stream - he was under 1" long and cute. Now not cute but still a great character fish, I've had to move him to his own tank as he was annoying everyone else.

Image
The tank itself that I just set-up for the pike - dirty glass!

Image
A wider view of my 4 tank fish room. I have two 48x30x18 tanks housing my "irreplacables" and the 36x12x18 for the pike. This is really all that remains of my old fishroom after I moved out of Edinburgh. The tank on the bottom is for treating tap water and bringing it to room temperature before I pump it into the other tanks.

Has anyone ID'd this for you?

Just a thought (I don't have that many), think about getting a plastic tub for doing this. I've found that glass aquaria don't like the constant fluctuations in stresses that go with constant emptying and refilling.

Pete,

Actually, I am rather  to admit I do not know what it is. I think Shane does, but I've not taken the time to find out.

Point taken about the tank, when I expand my fishkeeping abilites I'll certainly use a tub type thing.

Thanks,

Jools

Jools,
Where did we catch that Pike? Rio Zuata? We can try to get Francine to look at it. She is the Mistress of Pike cichlids.

Yes, it was in the Zuata with all those Chaetostoma. It looks like Crenicichla geayi to me after a quick look through Baensch.

Jools,
There were at least two spp. in the Zuata. I seem to remember catching one of the red sp. (yours) that must have been close to 10 inches SL. I often wished I had photographed more pikes as I caught so may different spp.

I too am glad to see sicklids in the mix! Shane gave me quite the case of paranoia about it when he visited and commented that he hadn't realized I kept so many  He's a very beyootiful pike Jools!

Hey! I just bought a new cichlid book last night. Trying to get ready for all the spp. in Mexico!
