What is my Blob Fish?

Post by racoll »

Got this pic off the http://www.oceans.gov.au/norfanz/ website from a deep sea expedition to the tasman sea last year. all they say is that it's a blob fish. i'm intrigued. i've never seen a fish with eyes set up in such a binocular fashion. it almost looks mammalian.

if someone could give me a latin name, that would be great!

thanks.

Psychrolutes. The little toad-headed beast to the lower left is an Ogcocephalid Batfish. The orange creature looks like a Liparid Snailfish.

It probably looks a LOT different when alive....

these things are hauled up straight from the abyss; think about decrompression and what it does to the shape of a small fish when hauled up several miles!

I mean; WE die like flies if we make a straight ascent too fast from a 30 meter SCUBA-dive.....these fish were down a couple of 1000 meters; the effects are probably hundreds of times worse; their shape is all screwed up
:(

Reminds me of a Allenbatrachus grunniens, but made of rubber!
