Yeah, you're fine. They're not dropping support for web forums, they're dropping support for newsgroups, which is a kind of decentralized world-wide fora. You can still access the newsgroups via Google groups (google originally was a search motor for newsgroups), but the signal-to-noise ratio of newsgroups is nowadays very low. Basically web forums like planetcatfish have replaced the newsgroups, and the groups have been dying for years.

Don't worry about it. Most people, even those who are knowlegdeable about computers, don't know that the newsgroups exist. They're a remnant from the early days of internet, they were once called USENet and was what existed before the World Wide Web and HTML.

If you're interested in having a look at them go to Google and click 'groups' and enter a search. Google bought Deja-News, a search engine for the newsgroups, and has stored about a billion posts covering every topic conceivable. Searching the newsgroups can often turn up information not found anywhere else.

If you have seen the site http://www.thekrib.com , it consists largely of select newsgroup postings (and mailing list postings).
