Clown and Butterfly Pleco Compatibility

Post by shuhu »

Hi

The LPS that owes me 2 Plecos, finally has the 2 types I'm interested in, so now I have to choose if I buy either:

2 Clown Plecos

or

1 Clown and 1 Butterfly Pleco

would it be a problem if keeping these 2 types or should I stick only to the 2 clowns, I've read that it's ok for clowns to be in pairs but not sure about 2 types in the same tank.

Size won't be much of a problem (I think) since clowns reach 10 cm (4") and Butterfly Plecos reach 12 cm (4.8")

They will be housed in a 75 Gal tank btw

Shuhu,
Are you sure the "butterfly plecos" are not loaches? All of the clown plecos I have seen here in Mexico are Panaque maccus.

I really don't know, since I havent seen them phisically, I actually called the store because its been almost 2 months since they owe me the plecos (they died) but they never had any when I went. They do sell those Butterfly loaches though, at least I can tell them appart so I know beforehand.

I've also been watching many pics so that I am as sure as possible that they will give me the corrent ones by tomorrow

Besides, I don't know to which stores you got at Mexico City, but I'm sure there is also "Maskota" over there (a chain LPS, just like PETCO for those who aren't familiar  ) , which is were I usually buy the fish and they have many providers so I'm hoping is the correct one.

Ohh, and the Clown Pleco I'm talking about is Panaque maccus just like you said, is there other type of Clown Pleco???

My LFS has a beautiful Butterfly pleco in. They have had it forever. It cost's $20, and has the black/white patterning as they are supposed to.

Shuhu,
Often just about any striped Panaque or Peckoltia is sold as a clown pleco. We also have +kota here as you said. We also have Echevarria Aquarium which imports from Colombia and Asia. Actually, I am pretty sure they supply Maskota with Colombian fishes (such as the P. maccus) as all the Colombian fishes I have seen at Maskota were the same spp. imported by Echevarria, but I have never asked.

I'll keep that in mind, I'm picking them up until tommorow :(

Btw I'm using these as reference:

Panaque maccus (Clown Pleco)
Dekeyseria (Butterfly Pleco)
