Looking at the images of O. niger on the Cat-elog, I couldn't help noticing this image
http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/do ... s/37_4.PHP
The scutes are very different from those fish seen in the other images (they are shorter in the vertical dimension). It looks very much like the smaller specimen we have which has been suggested to be O. sifontesi, however this species is not currently listed in the Cat-elog (but t'is on FishPaste).
Has there been another revision that has invalidated O. sifontesi?
Do other people agree that the specimen pictured is noticeably different from the other images listed for O. niger?

Actually I just hadn't looked that close at the picture you mention, this is a specimen from Deep Sea World in North Queensferry just outside over Edinburgh. O. sifontesi is now in the cat-elog as I had overlooked the O. holdeni review.
I also think that a picture taken of the big one you are looking after may too be O. sifontesi but not 100% sure. There seems to be difference in the length of the fish and the shape of the humeral process too. Do you have a few profile shots of you fish?

I'll see what we've got image-wise. I must admit that I'd always assumed our biggie (for which we've been running a competition for "guess the weight" as we have had to move it to another enclosure and wanted to weight it anyway, 22lb if anyone's interested) was a true niger. It is a very different-looking fish from the smaller one for certain (the recent image you got from Johnny is of our smaller fish, if you're wondering).
