I can edit the Cat-eLog if you like, but I'm unsure as to how to translate the Lucio part of the name - the rest I can take of Pimelodus.

Edit: How about: (Latin)Lucio = Pike (Greek)Pimele=Fat + (Greek)odous=teeth.

I would translate Lucio with "shining" (or "bright")

Ok, that was another option that I saw. I'll go with that.

Haggis tastes quite good; just try to forget what's in it :D
As a Scot I'm probably allowed to say it.. Haggis is awful..

"Skirlie" on the other hand, now that I could shovel down my neck until the cows come home.
It is basically just oatmeal fried in butter with onions.
Mince, potatoes, skirlie & maybe some vegetables if I'm feeling adventurous - that's proper food ;-)

then I remembered Lucifer aka "lightbringer" aka 'the shining one"

good thinking!

Right, new one.

1) You'd expect me to me an obvious choice, yet I'm not genuine
2) I share my species name with the "Godfather" of a large family

Wrt clue 1:
Allthough somewhat cryptic, you should take this literally - especially the "choice" part.
(removed the typo; that should make things easier....... sorry)

Wrt clue 2:
In the old days this family was thought to consist of just a few members, but atm this family outnumbers all other families. This "godfather" (or maybe "prototype") still exists, yet it was put in a (slightly) different genus. The species name stayed the same - and that's the name you need.

The species name you're looking for can be found in that family (clue 2), but I'm no loricariid. I am from S-Am.

I'm stumped

the first hint would point to a "pseudo" something, the second to a speciesname in the line of "loricatus", "loricata' or plecostomus or something

I went through the entire catelog (!) and couldn't find it.

there ain't no Pseudo thingy with Loricari surname

Hang on: the species name can be found in a loricariid. The genus name has nothing to do with loricariids, for the simple reason that it is NO loricariid.

This one should be a piece of cake for you Sid; it's old school Catfishology .
- What used to be the pleco "prototype" in the old days?
- You're right on the Pseudo part; now find an obvious family

One of the oldy-moldy names used to be Chaetostoma.....but, they used to call any catfish from South America "Chaetostoma." But, there's no "pseudo" about it.

Hurray

Obvious family = Auchenipteridae
Not genuine = false = Pseudo
There's just one Pseudo(tatia) listed (Pseud -from Pseudauchenipterus- is spelled differently - although it has the same meaning).

Prototype or "godfather" of all Loricariidae = Loricaria parva - now Rineloricaria parva. Older books are crammed with that name. The species name "parva" also appears in just one Auchenipteridae species.

I have been absent for a while due to a string of job interviews that required my full attention (as a result of which I will be moving to Cornwall this summer!). But, I am pleased to see that this game is still going now that I can relax a little again.
I'll hazard a guess:
