That sounds great. :D The simplest plan would be for you to pick me up at the park and ride, and we could take the M40. Maybe stop off at Wheatley on the way.

So, what's the current plans? Who's comming, where are we meeting up, etc?

I'm OK with the 11th, as long as leaving Farncombe (near Guildford) just after 11(AM) isn't too late.

I'm open to suggestions on exactly how the day fills out, but i'll pick Chrysichthys up in the morning & then i thought go to Maidenhead St Albans. Pick up anyone who's there & go to Wildwoods, then Amwell. I'll have to look at travel times but it's a safe bet 11am won't be too late

I think Chrysichthys might want to pop into Wheatley either on the way down or way back, but thats no worries.

Everyone/anyone else wanna give me opinions? I'm really quite flexible!

Sorry to hear that you can't make it Martin.

I'll try to leave shortly after 11, which should get me to St Albans. about 12.15 pm (google maps says that it is 53 miles and 1h05m.

How do we recognise each other?

So some mainly red football style shirt - I suppose that will be unique enough.

Thanks to Richard for a good day out.

I got a little bit lost getting to Maidenhead Aquatics in St. Albans (well, I got to the wrong garden-centre, as I was sure it was on the "right" of the road, when it was actually on the left-hand side of the road), but otherwise I think we all had a good day out.

The visits went from MA in St. Albans to Wildwoods then to Amwell Aquatics, and then back to Wildwoods to actually buy some fish and we just made it back to St. Albans in time for me to get my car out of the car-park before they locked it in... ;)

We saw lots of different fish - quite a few Loricariidae and Corys, but many others too. Brian (Chrisychtis) and Richard were mostly interested in the the Synos - and I saw several species that I've never seen before, but we did see some other relatively unusual ones too, in Wildwoods was one that I've never seen before, as well as a (actually, we saw two of those - one for sale at some three-digit price in Wildwoods, and one "on Holiday" in Maidenhead Aquatics).

We all spent a few pounds on fish - I got 5 nice looking from Wildwoods. Richard bought a at Amwell and a at Wildwoods, and Brian got two species of Syno from Wildwoods - I think and .

I think we all did

From the original post where it was suggested, Jools chipped in with the fact he could make it Dec/Jan so we'll have to plan something for around then & maybe you'll be able to make that one?

I'll start a separate thread soon :D

Fish Seen ~ Planet Catfish Day Out.

Post by Richard B »

Mats has posted elsewhere with a few details but to highlight some of the fish seen...

At Wheatley there were some & in a tank of C.Axelrodi was an oddity which i think was .

At St Albans was a stunning unidentified syno which looked like it was a genuine fully adult male (small spot variant). Also good sized & well marked & . In one tank was Pitramutra sp which is actually & there was a whole tank chock-a-block with tiny .

At Wildwoods were some beautiful full grown & L134, 128, 200, ....the list goes on & on for L No's! Some , a large , a single rita, possibly (i think it was labelled velvet Rita or similar), a single pseudopimelodus most closely resembling , but the individual was darker all round. A couple of fish labelled Hemibagrus Olyrus (fighting catfish) but i'm not sure if they were or an Olyra species - they appeared stubbier than the species in cat-e-log. A tank of small (& some very well marked) . To be honest there was a whole range of great cats & if you've not been Wildwoods is well worth a specific visit.

Amwell had some w/c tang synos: petricola, dhonti (Only one that went home with me - although i think it may be ), 'true' polli (not zambian/white), & some that were possibly ilebrevis. Nice, but very expensive fully adult L46, actually a whole range of L No's & others.

The only think i was really uncertain of were at Wildwoods labelled Gagata sp "Black eye" - there were 3-4" TL but the body shape reminded me not of G.cenia but more of although it may well be a gagata not in cat-e-log.

Thanks to MatsP & Chrysichthys for the company on what was very good day
