You still got some eggs in the nursery? How they doing?

Your right, they will keep spawning. So yeah, the females as well as the males seem to wear out a little with all the spawnings and no time for regeneration.
Splitting them up is definitely good to get them back into shape.

However, splitting them up might stop the spawning rythm and even after a reunion you might have to wait for new spawns to happen again. I wouldn't want to risk that right now. A viable spawn might just be 2 weeks from today.

In your current position, I would add more structure (wood, caves, slate, plants etc.) so the male won't chase the female that much (maybe create 2 feeding places -> no fights over food) and let them keep going at it for now until you receive at least one viable spawn with fry. Split them up after that for regeneration and to not be overloaded with fry in an instant.

If you have any more BNs than the breeding pair in that tank, try removing them, males can be harsh.
BNs usually spawn everywhere, but maybe you can help your dad with a smaller/narrower cave? Sometimes a very small cave is best and preferred. Even if you think it would be way too small, give it a try, the male will chose the right one by himself.
As was pointed out before, having the opening of the cave going upwards, so eggs would not roll out by themselves, can be a good idea.

Edit: Eric was faster :D

Thanks Eric I'm sitting up a slightly larger tank anyway with potentially 80+ young when it does eventually happen, I think the bigger tank will be needed. 80, 160 , 240 you get them idea. I might try a slightly smaller cave also. Maybe dad lost the eggs because cave was wrong shape/size.
Edit and thanks Jobro :-C

80 eggs with each new spawn, x3 spawns =240? Wishful thinking. With this species it doesn't work that way, silly... Unless you mean the number of NEW eggs in each subsequent spawn, then yes! My first spawn had about 60 eggs, my sixth had well over 200 eggs (I couldn't count them all). And the spawns can come so close together that you're adding the babies together in the same nursery tank. :-). Enjoy!!!

Oh dear! That was the least I thought I could get potentially going by the ammount of eggs this time I was aware egg production increases, but to 200. I can see my fish room will be full of ABN offspring.

Yes, I have a particular set of skills. b-) But don't worry, I won't - it's easier, and much kinder to the fish, to simply separate them. :-p

I've just set up a bigger tank for them and now just need to rapid cycle it-although safely. I already have a mature filter to use, but everything else is new. In a week or so I'm thinking of putting the female in first for a few days for some good feeding.

If you have enough gravel/sand in your pre-existing aquarium, you can accelerate your rapid cycle even more by using old gravel in your new aquarium instead of new gravel.

Im using fine sand, only course sand elsewhere, and I'm trying my best to make this one snail free, even spent more on good quality plants. But I will make sure it's all completely safe for fish to go in. By adding a mature filter I'm not sure how long it will speed things up.

This depends on what you mean by a "bigger" tank, but with a 100litre+ tank and a cycled filter, I wouldn't wait a single day to put in 2 single BNs... They probably are not even 10cm each. In a 160l tank with a big new filter and some plants I wouldn't be scared of adding 2 "small" plecos at all. But that's just my point of view.

Thanks Jobro, I did just start a thread related to this in Tank Talk forum, but I take the info given here along with any info that comes in that thread also. The tank is planted, everything is new apart from the wood and (over) filter and tank is just under 100 liters.

:(( I'm kicking myself at the moment, as just went to the LFS, a pair of adult BNs (normal morph) came in on Wednesday and I was going to go and see what they had in pleco wise, but didn't. They spawned and then the female was sold, sure my male would have taken up the opportunity, and possibly got it right. Although two females is too way much in terms of fry production rates.

They've both been eating non stop! Wood, runner beans, courgette, bloodworm, algae wafers etc, but this is a good sign as now the female can hopefully produce more viable eggs, looking slightly gravid already. Between the first and second spawning they hardly ate, and they are both much happier in the new tank, male has a new cave now. Also buying a Ziss egg tumbler for next time, if I dont need it for them, I will probably in the future so a good investment.

:d but this time I have a ZET 65 egg tumbler, just in case dad kicks. I woke up to find the ABNs spawning, still are right now, I'm hoping I get results ie healthy fry this time around.
Edit, I've now turned off the tank lights to leave them in peace:-)

Sure is getting crazy in the ABNs tank, a couple of weeks ago between the last and this spawning. I added a second female, I didn't think she was even mature, but had got plump in the middle. Possibly gravid. Now this is the situation. One female was actively showing interest in the male and his cave, but now this second female has jostled in on the action. Now what? My concern is with three in and around the small cave, one may get hurt. Do I leave them or slip in a bigger cave? Could really do with some advice here.

Hi Teresa,

In my opinion, a little tussle is natural and to be expected. My clown plecos will occasionally have torn fins or red pectorals (there's a photo on the CLOG page). As long as you see no serious damage, I'd leave them alone, as long as you know there are plenty of retreats for the losers of such events to go to for seclusion and safety. Hopefully you get eggs soon. ;-)

Cheers, Eric

P.S., Please take my advice as one opinion. I realize in hindsight that I've had two ABNs (first a female and recently my male) killed by violence in a spawning cave. So while a little fighting is okay, it can certainly escalate without warning. :-(

Doesn't seem to be fighting just jostling in the cave between the three, I will keep an eye on things, it's not looking as if any are hurt, seems the male isn't that interesred in the second female.

That's good. Give them their privacy now and don't scare them. :-) When I imagine how many times I peek under the tank blind (my clown tank is 85% surrounded by black paper), I ask myself could I have ever had kids if someone kept peeking in on my wife and me this often? Heck no - I'd still be childless! :))

Staying out of the room with the tank as much as possible, ssems to be taking longer, but when it gets dark outside, though I could cover up the tank now, if nothing has happened by them fairly sure it will overnight.

Seems to be a slight concern though Eric, @bekateen, as the small female is still trying to get in his cave to breed with him he's not really interested worried eggs will be kicked out in the process. Not sure what to do any ideas?
