New Riddle

i) I finally found the connection between Irn Bru and catfish! (see a few puzzles ago).
Drink too much of the stuff & you may end up like me.

ii) I come from a river in the north, named after a famous Scottish "valley" (except we don't call them valleys)

iii) It sounds like my first name ought to be Salvador, but they don't speak Catalan here abouts..

I don't know anything about zebras, but the one thing I know about anchors is to check the rope is tied to the boat before dropping it over the side.

Do not ask me how I learned this.

[edit: just realised that anchor you are talking about is a catfish . I thought it was an odd comparison!
It's still a good idea to tie it to the boat before throwing it over the side though - assuming you want to see it again]
Good idea 'cos if you throw the zebra over, it will swim so if you forget to tie the rope on, just whistle and hold out a sugar cube.

I'm supposed to be working so I'll take just one little look at the clues again...

I think I'm missing something you guys have and that's what makes it impossible...

you guys have some sort of online Latin translator running or so?

the descriptions in the catelog are a far cry from complete and I think there must be some site or somethi8ng with all that stuff on it

my Latin used to be pretty good (a long time ago), but more than half of the translations people put up aren't in the catelog at all

what's the big secret?

Hi Sidguppy,

I'm sure some people here can whip off Latin etc but for the highschool dropouts like me, I use google "free online Latin Translator" take your pick but make sure it has Spanish and Portuguese at least, German and Dutch help too. If you find anything that gives you the Greek translations in the English alphabet, let me know. I can't read Egyptian hieroglyphs either.

Scotcat has an etymology page but it has some words that don't match with other sources.
I have a thesaurus and atlas on my desk, thank god because the advanced search page distribution button works only if you know where all these places are already  i.e. to find exactly where 'Cess' is, you have to go to google.

*if* that last one is right, it's just because I got Dahli after searching the catfish basics series #5 page to find what fish are not southern and going to their family and looking down the list to find something like Dali. I also keep the genus thumbnails on my toolbar.

If you can tell me how to get ALL the catfish on one page, I'll bribe you with my last secret.

Got it in one!

sidguppy, English is riddled with borrowed latin/greek so I guess being a native english speaker helps. I am old enough to have had to study latin at school.
The (paper) latin dictionary which has lain at the back of a cupboard for many a year has recently started to earn its keep.

No latin or greek was necessary for that one though!

My first name is made of 3 words combined. They are one Latin and two Greek but the first word is very frequently used by people who are planted tank freaks and betta freaks.
I'm from the South.
My last name is almost English, I share is with many horticlulture related species.
I only have two keepers.

I know this can't be correct, yet I need to find out if the horticultural name "variety" (or "cross") sort of matches the "sp - hybrid"

Nope. Different family. Your fish is made from 2 names, mine is from three and it's in clue #2.
But I seem to have thrown you a curve ball:
I know this can't be correct, yet I need to find out if the horticultural name "variety" (or "cross") sort of matches the "sp - hybrid"
Think more of the proper species, not a hybrid, like Acer palmatum, palmatum would be the second name. Liriodendron tulipifera, tulipifera would be the second name but my fish's second name is very close to an english word. Much like anyone would have guessed what 'galaxias' means.

There's only 71 catfish in my size range (1st clue)

Here's a clue round up:
You could photograph me laying on your little finger.
My genus is like a tiny eyelid.
My family is MASSIVE and disliked by many...
My last name just goes to show how wonderful everyone thinks I am. (maybe that's why the batting eyelashes  )

 You're the only one that actually has the hoo-haas to voice your opinion in print but it seems that lots of people have a real grouch on for both cichlids and L numbers. Maybe they're just too popular at the moment?
.even if the whole planet goes on a schizophrenia spree ..
Maybe we could organize that on another thread.

So, Marc's up to his eyeballs in work at the moment so the floor is open to anyone!!

Rule are: Pick a catfish, usually from the Cat-eLog and give some clues about your fish. Easy or hard clues, what ever you wish.
Maybe some of the new people might want to hop in, maybe someone the old multi-tank brislenosed regulars?

Floors open to anyone, go for it :D

Are there nets on the end of those poles? What is shane actually doing - it looks like he's pretending to do something for the photo (LOL) is he actually lifting rocks? If so would they cling to the surface if the rocks were lifted out of the water?

Yes, there's a net between the poles, or brails as they're called, and Shane is lifting rocks to dislodge fishes into the net down current. Got about a dozen with around half an hours work, but is was strong current. One slip and you're 20 metres away and very wet.

For the record:
i) I come from the land beyond the dull, pallid river. Transvaal (beyond the (river) Vaal. Vaal = dull/drab/dreary)
ii) For a European farmer, getting here would be a real trek! the Boers Boer = farmer
iii) I'm harmless, but you might think twice before swimming in my river. Crocodile River
iv) Think Dundee and Australia and you'll understand why Crocodile Dundee.
v) I have a suckermouth, but don't call me pl*co!
vi) My species is one of my homeland's capitals Pretoria, S. Africa has three capital cities
