Sick Pictus Catfish - help please!

Post by robob »

I had an Ich outbreack in my tank. The Pictus Catfish responded VERY quickly to the medicine. But then right after, he developed Red Spots on his fins, and his very long whiskers fell off. Now he has 1/2 inch nubs on his face.

What is going on and what do I do?

...given adequate water conditions, and then slowly.

Some things like fin membranes never grow back if the base is severely damaged, a bit like human finger and toe nails when the growth plate is destroyed, but as long as your pictus still has stumps where the "whiskers" were, the prognosis is good.

Depends. I have a Corydoras sterbai I rescued from poor water conditions. Almost five years later, the barbels have not grown back completely, even though the water conditions have been fine over this period. P. pictus barbels should grow back much more quickly than Cory barbels, though.
