My River Tank - The Work Begins!!!
Hey Folks,
I began working on my river tank (finally). I have pretty much all the the plumming done on it now, the only alteration I might make is that I may add 2 more powerheads to the setup. There will be "power head quick filter" attachments going on the intake pipes.
Now the tough part is going to be to find some REALLY thick styrofoam to "terra-form" the thing!

Ben,
What capacity are the two power heads?
What fish do you intend to keep in the tank?
What have you used to glue the piping together? I assume it is 3/4" piping?
Will the quick filters be enough filtration?
Reason for the questions is that i am looking to do exactly the same. Bought the powerheads and piping this weekend.
I want to attempt to breed LDA33 Baryancistrus sp!

I will difinately keep updated pics going to show my progress.
Batho: I used 1" piping, as it's all I could get my hands on here. The powerheads are 802s , so they do have a good bit of capacity, but I would like the current stronger, which is making me consider adding 2 more. I'm not sure if the quickfilter will provide enough actual filtration, I don't think I would have a problem if I did end up upgrading to 4 powerheads, and 4 quick filters. I'll be hunting today for a "T Elbow Joint". If I can find some, then I'll be going with 2 more powerheads and 2 more filters.
I actually don't have the the piping "glued" together yet. The joints I used provide for a 3.5" overlapping piece of pipe, that forms an excelent seal without having to do anything extra. At the top where the powerhead cone connects to the plumming, there is currently nothing sealing it, but when everything is done I'll be using aquarium silicone to provide a nice tight seal.
As for the inhabitants:
L187b Chaetostoma cf
Clown Plecos
1 Royal
Ancistrus
Several types of loaches
Spotted Raphaels (I'm not sure if I'll be moving thim in or not)
Other than that, really, time will tell. It's very difficult to get interesting cats in my area, so I'll order in what I can that interests me that will be good in the tank, mostly Loricariidae that live in river environments.
LDA33 would be great to have a few of to make a go at breading, I wouldn't have much luck getting them in my area. I'll be going on a road-trip once the tank is all set up, and fully cycled, to an other province and see what I can find for interesting inhabitants for the tank.

Ben,
Sounds good. I think i would be concerned in not gluing them just in case one came apart and pulled a small Pl*co in! We can buy a 'glue' called Osmaweld which literally melts the plastic and is fixed after 15 mins making a permanent joint.
We are slightly luckier in the UK with several good lfs that specialise in South American fish:-

Prices are very good with LDA33 at about £20.

Batho,
That glue sounds like a good product to try. I would assume it would still work fine connect two different types of plastic...the tubing it's self is fairly soft, where the joints are a hard accrylic (sp). I also would assume that it's non toxic for fish once properly cleaned. Thanks for the suggestion!
My main problem is that (for thos unfamilliar with eastern Canadian geography) P.E.I is an islan on the east cost, that though has a land connection via bridge, it is much more difficult to get many things here. It's about a 4 hour drive to Halifax Nova Scotia, which is the closest city of real size.
I can't belive the stock list on that site! In our LFSs here, you will almost always see Common plecos, and on rare occasions you will find something else that has come in. There are not that many serious fish keepers here, so they don't take the risk of ordering in the more expensive, and interesting catfish. I have a good relationship with one of the LFSs and they show me the stock list of thier importers so I can specifally order thing, but usually what arrives is not what I ordered :/
kgroenhoej,
if I understand what you mean, in having the water flow come directly out of the pumps agains the glass to be redirected to the rest of the tank, I would think that would cause some swirling and would decrease the overall current when it impacts the glass. I have figured a way to easly put 2 more powerheads on it, most likely a good bit lower on the tank, to add extra currnt towards the bottom.
Today, I attached the Quick filters to the intake pipes. I bought 4 of them and doubled them up, so there are actually 2 filters on each intake. It worked quite nicely. Tomorrow I'll throw some more money down on a couple more powerheads, then I should (in theory) be ready to start landscaping.

Not really, it was a convenient size. I wanted to get something big enough to give me some flexibility, yet not so big that it can't be moved. I'm in a 3rd floor appt, moving to my own house in the fall. I wanted to be able to work on it, get all the bugs worked out, then drain a move it when the time comes. Something bigger would be too tough to move with my very narrow stairway.BK wrote:what made you choose a 90 gallon? any specific reasons
