What size is this fish? Just like so many other fish, the size will influence how easy it is to see if it's a male or female, and it would be almost impossible to get an accurate guess if it's less than 6 inches in length.
Males get "hairy" pectorals when they are mature enough (which probably also depends on it's general health).
