Distribution of Rinaloricaria lanceolata

Post by MatsP »

The current Cat-eLog page says:
Several sources list this species distribution in South America as limited to the Upper Amazon River basin but this species has been recorded in many more locations, basically most of South America from the northern and upper Amazon Basin to Paraguay in the south. This is possibly because several similar species exist in this range.
So would I be correct to say that the actual distribution for THIS species is "Upper Amazon River basin", whilst outside this range, it's most likely a case of misidentification?

Mats,

Sadly it's not a simple as that. Its range is the whole of the neotropics because the current definition of the species is so broad it covers a much of other fish that may, or may not, be the same. We're taking the broader view because (a) in some cases we don't know where the pictured fish came from and (b) there isn't really in recent solid info.

It occurs in the major drainages of Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia & Paraguay. It's like , there's likely six or more species involved but they're all lumped together.

Ok, if I change it so that it's "Amazon" and "La Plata", which covers most of the range, and leave the textual content in "distribution" to explain the whole story, does that make sense, or not?
