African Glass Catfish

Post by RoseFishWatcher »

I spotted these at a LFS in a nearby city (don't usually go there because it's out of the way). They were really cute! (I have a school of Asian glass cats and I really like them).

I am tempted to get some, but I don't know what tank I would put them in, not to mention how amazingly broke I am (college student budget). They were 8$ each, so a reasonable size school (6+) would be a big bite out of my non-existant funds.

I only have a number of tanks I could keep these in, but I'm not sure any of them would be all that suitable. Options would basically be:
a) 20gal with my 9 asian glass cats (and a handful of cories)
b) 20gal with my bamboo shrimp and banjo cats (only an option if they won't pick at my shrimp, who I like quite a lot)
c) 90 gallon, which sounds great but is expected to some day be home to an oscar... so not a good idea.

Sorry for babbling, I guess the question is simply this:

Are these guys very hard to find / usually much more expensive?

If not, I can just wait until a more financially stable time, which I expect in the relatively near future.

Thanks guys, I know I don't post often, but I love this site and read the forums all the time.

They are not easy to find, and I guess $8 is probably not too unreasonable a price, given where you are (so I guess it would be better for you to buy them now). They can go in either one of the 20-gallon tanks. Just make sure plenty of vegetation/shade is available for them.

I agree with HH; this may be a rare opportunity to obtain this species, so if possible one way or another I would buy them if I were you.
Talking about species: do you know which it exactly is?

I appreciate your thoughts on this.

I'm still not certain if I can get them, although I've mentioned it to my b.f. He might decide to get them for me. I plan on showing him the pictures from the cat-elog to see if he's interested, as he likes fish too.

I'm am not entirely certain of the species. I will take a closer look if I go to that store again, and of course also if I'm able to get some. Any tips for determining which it is?

Based on the assumption that I will get some of these fish, I'm still thinking about which tank I would put them in. I'm inclined to say that I would put them in the 20 with the asian glass cats, because the other 20 is unplanted. It is a low light tank. My only concern with that choice would be overstocking that tank. Would 15 - 18 glass catfish (9 asian, 6-9 african), 5 cories, and 2 SAE be overdoing it?

Thanks again for the input so far.
