Cat e log ID for Synodontis leoparda/leopardus

Post by The.Dark.One »

I dont agree with the ID on the photo on the cat e log. Based on the type specimens the fish on the cat e log is not S. leoparda/leopardus.

Going by the photos in your article I can see your point.
Which brings up the obvious question...what is it?
A young S. leopardina (leopardinus) perhaps, going by barbel length, size of adipose and a bit of a guess

I'm not sure, I'll try and have a look when I get home. Whilst we are at it, the image from Aqualog on the cat elog captioned as S. afrofischeri looks like a young S. batesi to me:

I think Jools would prefer to have a separate discussion on each ID. That way, when one discussion is resolved, there isn't a second item that has to be resolved separately [either by discussion here, or by changing the Cat-eLog].

I agree - i also agree with mats - this should be a separate thread
Lou: Every young man's fantasy is to have a three-way.
Jacob: Yeah not with another fu**!ng guy!
Lou: It's still a three-way!

Hi Birger

I can't match it with any described Synodontis. However, looking at the pattern and proportions I have a feeling that this is a juvenile of what could be a large species. So we may have a juvenile of a described species that we cannot recognise or an undescribed species. I saw these fish at BAS when the photo was taken and they were about 5 inches TL. It would be nice if anyone had a shot of an adult. I was going to buy one at the time but they weren't for sale first time around as they had just come in and the next time I visited they had bad whitespot.
