Pleco Tank

Post by Evan »

I have a few 10 gallons laying around the house what kind of pleco(besides otocinclus) could I put in? I saw some gold nugget plecos at the LFS and wondered if I could breed them. How do u sex a pleco? Thanks Evan

gold nuggets are going to get too big for a 10 gallon. You'll need to stick to species of either hypancistrus or peckoltia. Sexing plecos can be tough, some genus have males with wider heads, some have males with bigger spikes... basically I'd say if it's possible, get a group and hopefully you'll get a pair, but for a 10 gallon that's probably not the best idea, as even the smallest plecos are at least slightly territorial. A wide head, lots of spines on the body and especially the pectoral fin normally is a male. But it can be tough.

You should also check the main page here at PC. There are numerous articles on different plecos and spawnings, not to mention the extensive one by Ingo Seidel that documents sexing methods and spawning techniques.
