It would appear that nearly ALL Hypancistrus cross breed. I don't think anyone has done the whole 36 x 36 matrix (it would take some time to go through all 1296 combinations, given that not all Hypancistrus breed immediately) of every species we know of, but there are a lot of them that do cross-breed.

The fact that these live fairly close together MAY mean that they are actually NOT going to cross breed, but I wouldn't bet on that.

That would be my advice also, keep them separate. Good luck.

Hi,

I agree that no different species/forms/variations/l-numbers should be kept together. The possibility of hybridization is always given.

Just wanted to add the ones I know about:

L 28 x L 129
L 46 x L 260
L 260 x L 333
L 262 x L 270
L 46 x L 66
Hypancistrus sp. „L 66“ x Hypancistrus sp. "Guru Pá"

And even some hybrids x hybrids:

L 28 x L 129 x L 262 x L 270

I kept some L46 and L260 together many years ago thinking they looked so dissimilar that they wouldn't hybridize and was unpleasantly surprised to find out that what I thought were baby zebras where L46/L260 hybrids. Since then I have never mixed Hypancistrus again. I don't think I will ever mix anything from the same Family again.

Hi,

you can mix members of one family for sure. I think what you mean is genus. But even two specimens of two different genus may be able to mix. There are examples as well, especially lots of Pimelodids and Cichlids.
