Is this truly Corydoras melanistius?

Post by c_leed »

I had been searching for C melanistius and found a semi-local fish store that had them on their website. The store is about 45 minutes away so I haven't gone there yet. I took the picture off of the website though so I could get an opinion. The nose seems longer than it should, but what do I know? Anyone think they can tell me what species this is?

Hi.

I can't comment on the identity, but there is something about that picture that looks like a photo taken off the Internet rather than actual stock held by the shop. A lot of shops do this, but really shouldn't.

I could be wrong though. Might be worth looking at their other "stock" photos to see if they look like they were taken in the same tanks.

Unless your "not so local shop" is called "That petplace" it would appear that it's not their own image:

Thank you everyone. "That Fish Place" is exactly it's name. I never considered borrowed and/or stolen pictures being used on a petshops website, especially one that sells online. Seemed too disreputable to even consider.

It could of course be that it is THEIR picture, and the Russian site has stolen it!

But it is not uncommon for shops to use "stock" pictures of fish, such as Johnny Jensen's photos. And sometimes, the photos aren't well identified (I'm not saying JJ's photos are poorly identified - just that sometimes the photos from stock sites aren't that accurate).

There's no such thing as borrowed, it's either stolen or legitimately used. With some commendable exceptions, in my experience "familiar photos" are usually theft, plain and simple. IMHO would avoid a retailer that doesn't use their own pictures. If they can't be bothered even paying for or taking their own pics, then I would not place much faith in their identifying the fish or caring for the fish correctly either.

And these guys look like they have taken the time to photograph their own stock well. I agree with Racoll that it's got a "took from a book look" but that's maybe just because it's a good pic scaled down. It looks like theirs once you browse the rest of their site. I usually recognise stolen catfish pics as they are either from this site, one of our contributors or a book I've read!

I agree with Steve that the pic looks misidentified, for me it's like .

Greetings. Dunno if I can mention this, here, but I have some of these available. Unfortunately, I am not presently shipping. Depending where you are in PA, pick-up in NJ may be an option for you. Cheers. - Frank

Since the original post mentions searching for them, I don't see why mentioning that you have some for sale is a bad thing.

It is certainly not C. melanistius, it looks closer to C49.
