New Kryptopterus

Post by Silurus »

Ng, H. H., 2003. Kryptopterus paraschilbeides, a new species of silurid catfish (Teleostei: Siluridae) from mainland Southeast Asia. Natural History Journal of the Chulalongkorn University 3: 1â??8.

I take perverse pride in considering this one of the most unoriginal specific epithets for a catfish I have ever used. The specific epithet literally means "like a Schilbe-like Kryptopterus" (in reference to the similarity between this species and K. schilbeides).

Of late, I seem to be on a streak of coining unoriginal names (that are considered bad). Kryptopterus geminus was originally to be named K. cryptopteroides (meaning "like K. cryptopterus"), but the reviewers would have none of it.

My next target is to use the word "pseudo" in a specific epithet. If I discovered another undescribed Kryptopterus like K. paraschilbeides, I'd name it K. pseudoparaschilbeides. ;)
