Is this Lophiosilurus?

Post by bekateen »

Hi All,

I don't often crawl through Aquabid in recent years, but on a whim today I did. I was drawn to an advertisement (HERE) of "8-10 INCH HI ORANGE UGLY CAT. PSEUDOPIM. RAINIUS." The seller has 8 of them for $100 each.

Looking at the photo of the post, the mouth looks wide, the head looks dorsoventrally depressed and the tail is rounded or slightly bilobed, but not forked or strongly emarginate. I'm thinking this is Lophiosilurus, maybe . That said, the fish is described as "orange", so maybe .

Don't worry. After taking on a small group of and accidentally getting six when I thought I was getting much more manageably-sized , I have no intention of trying to care for something this big. IDK if the price is good or not, but I thought it was an interesting find and and I don't see them very often.

Can anyone tell from the photo of the advert what the species is?

Cheers,
Eric

Nice stumble-on, Eric. Love that you were "drawn" to the listing, probably makes us somewhat related :) Agree with your and Kirk's ID. When they are young (these are 8") their base color may be brighter or more visible and range abound the yellow-orange part of the spectrum, depending on many things, diet not the last of them. Price is about average.

Thanks for the price value context, Viktor. Not that I'm buying them, but they're there for anyone who wants them.

As for the rest, I couldn't agree more. :-)

Cheers,
Eric
