I just tested the water in my tank, and got the following results.
Temperature 26 deg c , 78 F
Amonia 0.1mg/l
nitrite 0.0-0.1 mg/l
nitrate 25mg/l
Ph 8.5
The ph level seems to me to be too high, this may be dur to the water here in the thames valley region. Could there be another cause? Does this indicate a hard water?

Usually, hardiness and pH go hand in hand; but not always.
I should check the hardiness too. and the KH (amount of carbonates; equals the buffering capacity of the water)
You might have IDEAL Riftwater, and if you have I suggest you get:
1# a BIG tank
2# a few Synodontis granulosus
3# start breeding
have fun!

Plan B should not automatically be twice as much explosives as Plan A
