Etymology Ameiurus: ''curtailed'' refers to the lack of a deep notch in the caudal fin. Juveniles and sub-adults are brown in colour, hence the specific name.

Size 290mm or 11.4" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification Flat Head with a concave snout profile. Short anal fin, rounded in outline, 17 - 20 rays. Large dark blotch at dorsal fin base. Yellow green to olive above, dusky yellow on sides, and whitish blue to white below.
Sexing Females are much fuller bodied during breeding season. This occurs during early spring.
General Remarks Inhabits rocky riffles, runs and flowing pools of swift streams. Rarely found in backwaters.

Distribution North America: Atlantic Slope from Dan River system in southern Virginia south to Altamaha River drainage in Georgia, and middle St. Johns River drainage in Florida, USA; Gulf Slope in Apalachicola River drainage in Georgia, Alabama and Florida, USA. Recently reported from upper Coosa River system in Georgia, USA.

Furniture A sand substrate with stones and large piece of driftwood to hide under during the day is very desirable.
Compatibility Social with most anything they can not swallow, to be on the safe side do not house with anything less than half it's own size.
