Etymology | Greek, barys = heavy + Greek, agkistron = hook - Essentially "Heavy Ancistrus". From the Greek chryso, meaning orange or yellow and loma meaning border, in allusion to the colored band at the border of the dorsal and caudal fins. |

Identification | Distinctive fish with broad yellow bands on the dorsal and caudal fins, body is dark olive green or brown, and different from Baryancistrus xanthellus AKA Gold Nugget Pleco that have small or medium yellow spots along with the yellow bands along the edges of dorsal and caudal fins. |
